Get a Golf Practice Net
75
One of the best ways to improve your pitching and chipping game is to use a golf practice net. If you want to shoot low scores, you need to be a master at chipping. Lets face it, unless you can hit at least 16 of 18 greens every round, which most people can’t, you need to be good at chipping. Even those three greens you missed will be at best a bogey if you cannot chip close to the hole, which translates into shooting a round of three over par, assuming you par the other fifteen holes. These numbers I am throwing at you would be true for someone with a great golf game, however, most golfers don’t have a great golf game.
Lets say you get yourself a practice net and you chip for 30 minutes ever day. You practice hitting a shot from one distance over and over until you can do it in your sleep. Then you change the distance and hit until you can do that one in your sleep. Rinse and repeat for several different distance from the net and you will be amazed at what this will do for your chipping game. Eventually, you get a feel for how hard to hit the ball from any distance, based on the distances you practiced from. Having this “feel” is what distinguishes the elite from the good.
The next time you are on the course and you are faced with a chip, you will know exactly how hard to hit it to get it close. This concept is true for every golf shot, although I’m just using it for chipping. If you were to take this same practice drill on to the green and putt from different distances over and over, you would improve your putting tremendously. This is how the pros do it. They spend all day hitting shot after shot after shot until they master it and can reproduce it on the course. The difference is, they have good mechanics and a lot of time to practice, unlike the average golfer. It doesn’t matter how much you practice, you will never be as good if you practice bad habits. There is a saying that goes “practice makes perfect”, which is actually incorrect. It should be “perfect practice makes perfect”.
There is also the use of hitting full swing shots when it comes to a net. There is nothing really more helpful than to be able to hit practice shots of all kinds, this is why driving ranges are so popular. Pros spend the majority of their time on the driving range. I have read that unless Tiger Woods is competing in a tournament, he rarely plays a round of golf. Instead he is on the driving range or putting green. With a golf practice net, you can have your own driving range right in your back yard.

Make One Yourself
If you are holding back from getting yourself a golf net because you don’t want to pay for one, although I don’t think they cost very much, then just make one yourself. Go get some ¾ in pvc pipe, netting, pvc glue, and cement. You will also need two T pieces and two elbows for ¾ inches. I drew a diagram that will show you how it is supposed to be put together. I apologize for the elementary drawing, but I am no artist and it is the best I can do with Microsoft Paint. A hacksaw works great for cutting the pipe and you can probably have this put together in about half an hour.
I hope I have shown you the value of having your own practice net in your back yard. If not, maybe you learned something about practicing golf, because that is the ultimate goal here. The bottom line is, if you want to improve your game and lower your scores, you have to practice. Tiger Woods didn’t become who he is because he has a natural talent for golf, its because he works harder than anybody else and puts in the effort. You can do the same.

Great advice! Btw... You shouldn't let your kids draw diagrams for you ;).
