Start Hog Hunting Today

For those of you who haven’t tried it, hog hunting is one of the most exciting and exhilarating hobbies you can have. My first experience with this sport was watching a hunting video that I will never forget. In my sophomore wildlife technology class in high school, we watched Ferocious Tuskers with hall of fame bow hunters Bob Foulkrod and Dan Fitzgerald. It was one of the most exciting hunting videos I had ever seen. It was great watching these guys walk around in the forest, equipped with only a bow and arrow, looking for wild hogs. At times, these hogs would appear out of nowhere and charge at them, causing them to either attempt a shot or jump into a tree for cover. I got a rush just watching the video and couldn’t imagine what it would be like actually doing it in real life. I was a deer hunter all throughout high school and tried duck and turkey hunting on occasion. I knew after watching this video that wild boar hunting is where the excitement is.
There are a few things you should know about boar hunting before you jump into it. I know the above description makes it sound like a thrill and somewhat dangerous, but it doesn’t have to be this way. The more popular style of hog hunting is similar to deer hunting where you scout a location and get in a stand or high place where you can attempt to call them in. If you use hunting dogs, you will be on the ground trying to track one down. This is where they can become aggressive and try to attack you, but this rarely happens. However, I believe it is much more exciting and a thrill to hunt them this way. As I said earlier, hunting these animals requires similar practices to that of deer hunting. Population management, feeding areas, and time are few of the important things that determine your success.
Wild hogs live mostly throughout the southeast United States, so If you don’t have access to an area where hogs live, you will need to look into hog hunting trip from a guide service. Before you do, you need to know exactly what you will be needing before you begin pricing different services. Some offer everything you will need including food, lodging, and equipment. Wilderness Hunting Lodge in Tennessee is an excellent service that offers all of these things, and will even field dress your kill. I believe you can stay in a hotel, if you would rather not stay at their lodge. If you are looking to do some Texas hog hunting, which probably is one of the best states for this sport, there are great services like Wildlife System Inc, and Pope Brothers Guide Service. The most important thing is that you shop around for the best price. Sometimes the prices are cheaper at different times of the year. Things like location, time, amenities, and reputation of the service will have a factor in how much you pay.

Hunting Tips
If you are thinking about getting into the sport, these guide services are a great place to start. You will learn things that you can use every time you go hunting. If you have a loved one that you think would be interested in the sport as well, you can take them on a hunt with you. These hunting trips make excellent gifts for birthday or Christmas. I guarantee your loved one would be thrilled to death to find out they were going on a wild boar hunt.
Before I finish, I should probably give you some tips on how to be successful in your hunting adventures. One thing you want to keep in mind, is you want to be hidden. This is the same for most hunting and hunting hogs is no exception. If they see you, they will probably run. The second thing I recommend is doing some scouting. This will allow you to choose a good spot to hunt from. Find out where they are nesting and feeding, then get a stand or blind somewhere downwind with a good view. Lastly, I recommend using an in heat scent. These scents are probably the best and most popular for attracting wild boars.
I hope that what I have offered some light on the subject of hog hunting and you will consider it in the future. If you are and outdoors person and enjoy hunting, I don’t think you will regret it.

I took my family to a resort in the desert north of Phoenix a few years ago. While out at night looking for scorpions, a large group of wild boars (hogs, pekerie,?) wandered upon us and scared us to death. Some had to be over 400 pounds. We ran to the house, and is a great memory for us.
